EEE-6412 - Heterostructures and Compound Semiconductor Devices
Course content:
Introduction to III-V, II-VI and other compound semiconductors and their heterostrucutres; GaAs and GaN-based device technology. GaAs metalsemiconductor field effect transistor (GaAs MESFET): introduction, structure, equivalent circuits, current in linear and saturation for both long channel and short channel device, cut-off frequency, effect of source and drain resistances, gate resistance and application of GaAs MESFET. High electron mobility transistor (HEMT): practical HEMT structure and energy band line-up for both GaAs and GaN, introduction to newly proposed HEMT structures, equivalent circuit, HEMT noise, pseudomorphic and metamorphic HEMT and applications. Opto-electronic integration of compound semiconductor devices: heterojunction phototransistor and light amplifying optical switch and their applications. Low-temperature compound semiconductor electronics. Design consideration of MMICs and power MMICs using compound semiconductor devices.

EEE-451 - Processing and Fabrication Technology
Course content:
Substrate materials: Crystal growth and wafer preparation, epitaxial growth technique, molecular beam epitaxy, chemical vapor phase epitaxy and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Doping techniques: Diffusion and ion implantation. Growth and deposition of dielectric layers: Thermal oxidation, CVD, plasma CVD, sputtering and silicon-nitride growth. Introduction to Semiconductor Characterization Tools. Etching: Wet chemical etching, silicon and GaAs etching, anisotropic etching, selective etching, dry physical etching, ion beam etching, sputtering etching and reactive ion etching. Cleaning: Surface cleaning, organic cleaning and RCA cleaning. Lithography: Photo-reactive materials, pattern generation, pattern transfer and metalization. Steps of lithography. Non-optical lithography. Discrete device fabrication: Diode, transistor, resistor and capacitor. Integrated circuit fabrication: Isolation - pn junction isolation, mesa isolation and oxide isolation. BJT based microcircuits, p-channel and n-channel MOSFETs, complimentary MOSFETs and silicon on insulator devices. Testing, bonding and packaging.
EEE-465 - Analog Integrated Circuits
Course content:
Introduction to Analog Design,CMOS device Modeling, CMOS Fabrication Sequences,Review of MOS amplifiers. Passive and active load and frequency limitation, Current sink and sources, Current Mirrors: Basic,cascode and active current mirrors; influence of channel modulation, mismatched transistors and error in aspect ratios,Wilson current mirror,Constant current or voltage references: Supply voltage and temperature independentbiasing, band-gap references; constant-Gm biasing. Widlar band-gap voltagereference,Differential pairs: Differential vs. single-ended operations of simple amplifiers,differential and common mode voltages, common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), inputcommon mode range (ICMR), transfer characteristics, small signal analysis, and frequency response of differential pairs.Switch capacitor circuits: Equivalent resistance of a switched capacitor, unity gain buffers, charge amplifiers and integrators. Sampling switches: Charge injection, clock feed-through, charge feed-through; quantized model and remedy of charge injection.Switched capacitor filters.Phase Locked Loop. Origin of internally developed noises in ICs; shot, thermal, flicker,burst and avalanche noises in a device. Representation of noises in circuits, noises in single stage and differential amplifiers, noise bandwidth.
EEE-315 - Power Electronics
Course content:
Fundamental of power electronics, characteristics of static power semiconductor devices (BJT, MOSFET, IGBT, Thyristors). AC/DC power converters: uncontrolled rectifiers (single phase and three phase), controlled rectifiers (single phase and three phase), dual converter. AC/AC power converters: phase- controlled converters (single phase and three phase), AC switch, cycloconverter. DC/DC converters: choppers (step down and step up), switching regulators (buck, boost, buck-boost). DC/AC converters: types, single phase and three phase inverters. Various applications of converters.
